Replacing Hardware Requires New Device Drivers

Whenever you place any of your hardware you also need to replace the drivers. This usually comes in with the package when you buy the device, but your computer installation program will ask you when you begin installation. You will have the option to choose installation from a CD or from a list. Afterwards you also have the option of searching for drivers if your device is not on the list. Do not think because your hardware device does not show up on the list of drivers that are installed on your computer that you must choose. If you make the wrong selection, the device is not going to work.

One reason you may not find your exact device installed on your computer is because the drivers installed on your computer are too old or too new for the hardware device. In that case, you will need to search for the drivers online. In order to do that you need to know exactly what you have, both manufacturer and model of both the device as well as the computer on which you need to install it. All of these components play essential roles in the efficient operation of each hardware device you install. The more hardware you install, the more important it is to make sure your device drivers are fully compatible with the devices.

Do not make the mistake of thinking because you buy a new printer and connect it to your computer it is automatically going to work. If the new printer uses the same drivers as the old one then it may automatically work. However, if your new printer is a different manufacturer and model, it is more than likely the drivers will be different. This same concept holds true for other hardware devices you install including some keyboards, new CD or DVD drives, fax machines and scanners.

Once you install the new hardware, the computer program will guide you through the remainder of the process. Do not attempt to use any new hardware until the computer tells you installation is complete. If you attempt to use it before it is completely installed, you may have trouble running it or if it is a multiple device such as a printer/scanner/copier/fax, you may not be able to use all the components. Attempting to rush through the installation process will only make things more difficult later.

If you are a new computer user, make sure you choose the right drivers for any new devices that do not come with the software. If you have any doubts, refer to the owner's manual or consult with someone who is experienced installing software and drivers. Do not try to speed the process by choosing something that is not exactly compatible with your device and computer or you will have to spend time uninstalling the components you have already installed and started from the beginning. Save yourself time and aggravation by doing it correctly the first time - if you aren't sure don't begin until you have all the answers you need.
