Purpose of Network Drivers

Anyone who has been using computers for a while knows the importance of transmitting data from one location to another. Those who have been in the business world before the introduction of the Internet into the workplace know about Ethernet connections and other types of mainframe connections. While the use of Novell and other mainframe networks has been replaced even in the business sector by the internet, the need for software to provide a stable connection still exists. There is still the need for a way for one computer to be able to connect to the other or reach out to the "information highway".

In the modern world of the Internet, the Ethernet has not become obsolete, but its use is not as common as it was when only companies had the need to connect to other computer. However, the Internet has the process much easier and instead of connecting through a main frame compu8ter system, personal computers allow each computer to connect on its own using a network card. However, the network card is no good without network drivers, the software that allows the computer to connect to the Internet or any other network to which it may be connected.

What happens if your network drivers become corrupt - or if they are accidentally deleted from your computer? Since the network drivers are the software that allows your computer to connect to other computers or the Internet, their absence or inability to work means you will not be able to connect to those sources. You will be able to use your computer for any local functions - meaning those programs that are installed directly on your personal computer - but you will not be able to use any programs that are web-based or at another remote location.

While using modern network connections can be advantageous, there can be disadvantages as well. In the past when a main frame connection went down, everyone on that network lost the ability to access information within the network. Though that is no longer the case, it also means if one person loses the ability to access the network a technician will have to physically repair the problem since the lack of a working network driver prevents IT professionals from using remote assistance to locate the problem.

Using network drivers on a personal computer allows those in the IT department to provide access to employees based upon their login information. Thus if one computer loses its drivers the employee can go to another one and still obtain the information they need. Most home computers do not have this capability, but that is only because the owners have not taken the time to network those computers. Anytime a network connection exists between more than one computer, the user can access the same information on each computer within that network. However, this process requires the installation of up to date drivers that have the right design for the operating system on each computer within the network.
